Perforations

A prime function of a metal ceiling is the creation of a pleasant room environment via intelligent noise abatement. Armstrong perforations offer an extensive spectrum of aesthetic solutions for effective acoustic comfort.

Perforation types

Perforation and light reflectance
The brighter a ceiling surface is, the better its reflectance. A small overall proportion of perforated surface will result in a high reflectance. As an example, ceilings using ultramicro® perforation Rg 0501 where only 0.64% of the total surface area is perforated will require significantly less illumination wattage than other types of perforation.

Reverberation time / sound absorption
Depending on the intended purpose of a room, it is prudent to optimise the reverb times. Reverberation will depend on the total sound absorption in the room. The degree of sound absorption will therefore be an important factor in rooms where speech intelligibility or noise diminution is required. The overall sound absorption capacity of a room will be the determining factor of suitability. This will be influenced by the absorption properties of the room's perimeter surfaces, i.e. the walls, ceilings and floors, but also by people, fixtures and furnishings, plants etc.

Sound absorption level
Proper sizing of the perforation pattern and acoustic inlay will ensure that the absorption properties of a metal ceiling are commensurate with needs. Airborne sound absorption is taken to mean the conversion of sound energy into heat as a result of friction in the absorbing materials and systems. The sound absorption coefficient αS is defined as the ratio between non-reflected and incident sound energy, and has a value between 0 and 1.

Ultramicro® perforation - the revolutionary extra-fine perforation
Armstrong metal ceilings with ultramicro® perforation set new standards. Incident sound waves are absorbed without the need for any mineral wool inlays, acoustic non-wovens or even an acoustic coating. Sound absorption takes place by standard Armstrong ceiling panels that are perforated with practically invisible miniature holes less than 0.5 mm in diameter.

Perforation types
Depending on the complexity of production, Armstrong has subdivided the available perforations into six groups: namely classes A to F. Our sales representatives will be pleased to provide you with further information. The following perforation patterns are held in permanent stock by Armstrong:
